He came. He saw, he fizzled. The Second Coming of Volodymyr Zelenskyy to Washington, DC on September 21 was a far cry from his Roman Empire-scale triumphal visit nine months before.
“The blue-and-gold flag draped hero worship of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s last Washington trip, which stirred comparisons to Winston Churchill’s wartime stand against Nazism, was a distant memory,” even CNN acknowledged.
It was not supposed to be this way: Real Messiahs conquer the world on their Second Comings: That is what Second Comings are all about.
However, Zelenskyy – a broad, lowest common denominator comedian by trade – got it back to front.
When Zelenskyy came to Washington the first time on December 21, 2022, he was feted as the man of the (21st) Century. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi swooned, the figures of Abraham Lincoln and Winston Churchill paled beside him.
“Eighty-one years later this week, it is particularly poignant for me to be present when another heroic leader addresses the Congress in a time of war — and with Democracy itself on the line,” Pelosi wrote in a letter to colleagues referring back to Churchill’s historic personal address to both chambers of Congress on December 26, 1941.
Previous inept supposedly commanding figures like US President Woodrow Wilson in 1919 and British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain in 1938 were literally driven mad by such wild and unwarranted adulation, Of course, Zelenskyy was no exception.
It helped enormously that in December 2022 he came to Washington with the reputation of having raised and directed an army that had stopped, defeated and bewildered the Russian army and stripped of its invincible reputation of the previous 80 years.
That achievement was in fact all hype, exaggeration, myth and wishful thinking. But no one in Washington or the US media wanted to look too closely then. The Lie was the Victory.
As a result, “great” American self-styled “strategists” like National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan genuinely dreamed that the total annihilation of the Russian Army by the US and NATO trained and equipped Ukrainians was only a few months away and that the total disintegration of the Russian state and the entire incorporation of the Eurasian landmass directed by Washington and New York capitalism with Brussels and London as eager predatory partners would immediately follow.
As veteran US investigative journalist Seymour Hersh has documented and reported, Sullivan really believed this and said so to other US officials.
But That Was Then and This Is Now.
Zelenskyy returned to Washington on his Second Descent from the Heavens as a desperate, disheveled and disreputable supplicant. At his demand, the NATO Alliance had stripped itself of 30 years of weapons with only hundreds of thousands of dead Ukrainian boys to show for its efforts.
Even the European Union had defied Washington and refused to accept his outrageous request that hundreds of thousands of young Ukrainian men be forcibly deported back to his control against their will to be vacuumed up into his next army – a fourth one, after he squandered the lives of three previous forces – to be thrown to the slaughtered against the armed-to-the-teeth, now experienced and prepared Russian defense lines.
Even on Capitol Hill, a handful of Congress members and senators are finally awakening to the limitless kleptocracy and corruption of his regime and military supply system and the awful conditions in which he enslaves his soldiers.
Ukrainian military dead are now over half a million – a figure unimaginable to the geniuses and pundit visionaries of Washington when Zelenskyy pranced before them to endless ovations like the Emperor Nero on Opening Night at the Gladiator Games in Rome. Already, Zelenskyy has killed far more of his own people in less than a year than Nero or Caligula ever did – or dreamed of doing.
Zelenskyy – a cheap borscht belt comedian who has always danced shamelessly to the tunes of open neo- (and classic) Nazis – found to his obvious amazement that this time no-one in the capital of the United States wanted to hear his act.
On his Second Coming to Washington, Zelenskyy learned the hard, humiliating lesson that endless corrupt, egomaniacal, narcissistic and shamelessly greedy puppets of America have learned before him from China’s Chiang Kai-shek (Jiang Jieshi) to the Shah of Iran to former Afghan President Hamid Karzai. America and its leaders quickly get tired of their toys when their uselessness is finally exposed, and their incompetence and criminality laid bare.
That does not mean the wild flow of US aid will end or the funding will be cut off. That will only happen after Joe Biden is safely reelected a year from now, as he still dreams. Or after Michelle Obama is safely elected as a far preferable performing puppet in his place, as the rest of the Democratic Party’s top leadership now clearly dreams.
Biden will continue to do what he only knows how to do: Do a Neville Chamberlain after his sellout to Hitler at Munich. Continue with an already discredited, catastrophic, ruinous policy because he has no alternative and lacks the guts and will to say No and end it.
Young Ukrainian soldiers will continue to be sent to their deaths for nothing. Certainly not for their country and its genuine democracy which were ruthlessly destroyed – not by the Russian invasion of February 2022 to end the continued terror killing of, by then 14,000 Russian speakers in the secession provinces of Donetsk and Lugansk, but by direct and open US and European Union action and encouragement in March 2014 in the Maidan Violent Revolution.
When Zelenskyy took his worn-out act to the United Nations in search of a better, more receptive audience, again he was humiliated. The members of the United Nations General Assembly did not even bother showing up. The great hall was more than half empty. The nations of the world and their delegations voted with their feet. They turned their backs on Zelenskyy and his American masters.
In Canada, the Ottawa parliament to its eternal embarrassment and shame gave him a rousing welcome. And then discovered they had cheered a Waffen SS veteran from the Eastern Front in World War II alongside him. But what else can you expect when the ferociously anti-Russian Deputy Prime Minister of Canada is the granddaughter of a prominent World War II Ukrainian collaborator with the Third Reich who visited Auschwitz publicly during the Holocaust and fully approved of what was going on there at the time.
Zelenskyy even mortally embarrassed Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who was shamelessly craven as always eager to please him. He couldn’t even get that right.
On the cheap comics circuit, in Ukraine as in New York State’s Catskill Mountains, when your act bombs so badly time after time, you’re fired. Your gigs vanish. You are all dried up.
But don’t expect Biden, Secretary of State Antony Blinken and their fellow Proud Clausewitz strategists to totally give up on Zelenskyy and his doomed crusade with its frightful still growing cost in human suffering, blood and lives. There is more of those infernal juices to be squeezed out of the Clown of Kiev’s voodoo doll yet.
But no one will mistake Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s Second Wartime Coming to Washington for his first.
