The Doomsday Clock Will Move Forward
So why is the grave threat of nuclear war virtually absent from our politics?

Donald Trump’s election victory can genuinely be called a miracle, given the powerful political, financial, judicial, informational, public, and criminal forces that tried not only to prevent it but also to imprison him for decades or even kill. Let’s add to this that, at the age of 78, campaigning while facing large enemy armies is difficult, even for a younger man.
Nevertheless, Trump won, and judging by inauguration speech (pictured), he is in great shape. During the swearing-in at the Rotunda Capitol, he said that a wave of changes awaits the country, that he is optimistic, and that the United States is beginning a new era of national success, adding that “the decline of the country is over and America’s Golden Age is beginning right now. From this day on, our country will prosper and be respected worldwide again, and we will no longer allow ourselves to be used to our advantage.”
Outgoing Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, and other Democratic Party leaders sitting in the hall had stone faces when they had to listen to Trump’s promises that US sovereignty and security would be restored and “the vicious, cruel, and unfair actions of the Ministry of Justice and other government cabinets will end.”
Trump promised that he would not use the government to persecute political opponents, saying that he had to deal with this from the previous administration. “My recent election is a mandate to completely reverse the terrible betrayal and all these numerous betrayals that have taken place and to give people back their faith, their wealth, their democracy, and indeed their freedom.”
As for the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, judging from some statements by members of the new U.S. Administration, it is not all that clear.
Now, about ending the war in Ukraine and relations with Russia. As President Trump said, the Ukrainian tragedy would never have happened under his term. The Obama-Biden administration orchestrated the 2014 coup in Ukraine, and even more substantial proof of who is responsible for the most dangerous crisis between two major nuclear powers is presented in Scott Horton’s book Provoked, where the author describes how Washington started the New Cold War with Russia and the catastrophe in Ukraine. All this, plus the recent New York Times disclosure of how Biden’s Secretary of State Blinken sabotaged the ready-to-sign Istanbul peace deal in March 2022, ending the war and saving hundreds of thousands of lives, could help the President find the proper avenues to end the horror and restore normality in the US-Russia relations.
During his speech, Trump never mentioned Russia or Ukraine but had previously accused the Biden administration of fomenting the threat of a nuclear World War III and expanding NATO to Russia’s borders. However, judging by some statements from his new team members, not everything is clear.
Thus, National Security Adviser Mike Waltz and Special Representative for Ukraine Keith Kellogg practically repeated the demands of the previous administration to lower the military age for Ukrainians, which means that they are not interested in ending the conflict. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessant threatened new sanctions if Russia disagreed with the demands of the United States’ plan to end it. However, they all declare loyalty to Trump, so he will have the last word, unlike in his previous term, when almost all members of his foreign policy, including Vice President Pence, betrayed him.
At least two nominated members for the new cabinet who perfectly understand the causes of the Ukrainian tragedy and will be able to give the right advice are Tulsi Gabbard and Robert Kennedy. So far, they and none of the nominated candidates, except Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, have been confirmed in the Senate. The Republicans have a slight majority in the Senate, and confirmation of Trump’s nominees could be a litmus test for the future of Trump’s reforms.
The good sign is that all of them pledged loyalty to President but what Trump himself decides we will find out very soon. The countdown for the promised new course has begun, and everyone is waiting for his call to Putin to decide on the date of their fateful summit. Trump repeatedly said that “getting along with Russia would be a good thing, not a bad thing,” but those who opposed Trump’s vision orchestrated the “Russiagate” hoax that ruined his first term and loss in the 2020 elections. Nevertheless, on April 25, 2020, U.S. and Russian Presidents issued a joint statement with the following message: “The “Spirit of the Elbe” is an example of how our countries can put aside differences, build trust, and cooperate in pursuing a greater cause. As we work today to confront the most important challenges of the 21st century, we pay tribute to the valor and courage of all those who fought together to defeat fascism. Their heroic feat will never be forgotten.”
Returning to the ideas of the “Elbe Spirit” and the good old days of US-Russian relations will benefit both nations and mankind.
