American foreign policymakers often wonder aloud why it is that much of the world has such an anti-American reflex. Why the “Ugly American”? Graham Greene would never have written a novel entitled “Ugly Russian” or even “Ugly German”. It is not just Iran that considers the US as the “Great Satan”. Remember that day at the UN General Assembly when the late Venezuelan president, Hugo Chavez, accused President George W. Bush of belching sulfurous fumes, and most of the chamber chuckled. Today we have the US funding and arming Ukraine after provoking Russia by advancing NATO up to Russia’s borders. In the Middle East, President Joseph Biden supports Israel unequivocally without speaking of the often murderous history of Israel’s repression and Israeli claims to and occupation of Palestinian land.

The nations of the world, operating under the UN Charter and defending the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, must move urgently to help save both Israel and Palestine.

Starting in 2024, the American pharmaceutical company Merck & Co. will halt exports to Russia of Zepatier, a drug used to treat hepatitis C. Merck has also already stopped supplying Russia with vaccines against chickenpox, measles, rubella, and mumps, as well as with Raltegravir, a medicine used to protect HIV-affected people against developing AIDS.

In 1999, a seemingly innocuous speech occurred in Chicago that unveiled a new paradigm in world affairs that was dubbed “the Blair Doctrine”. In this speech, Blair asserted that the realities of the new age of terrorism had rendered the respect for sovereign nation states irrelevant and obsolete requiring a superior doctrine compatible with the need to periodically bomb sovereign nations you don’t like. This new age of humanitarian bombings would be called “the post-Westphalian age”.

It is the “rule of law” that governs America which Washington kept proudly declaring domestically and to the world, but nowadays it looks more and more like the “rule of lies” would be a more appropriate definition. I am not necessarily speaking here about “lying Joe”, although the lies often coming from his mouth should be noticed, but about lies generated by the whole government system.

On November 18, 2021, Putin held a meeting with Russian diplomats. Facing renewed vows that Ukraine would enter NATO and continued concerns that NATO’s “military potential and infrastructure [would be] in the vicinity of Russian borders,” Putin turned to his minister of foreign affairs, Sergey Lavrov, and said, “it is imperative to push for serious, long-term guarantees that safeguard Russia’s security . . ..”
