With over 120 initial signatories – including many well-known personalities from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland – and more than 20 organizations and initiatives, the campaign “For a neutral Germany” was launched on February 15, 2025, the day of the Munich Security Conference, which takes place under a star of hope, and numerous nationwide actions for peace. It sees itself as cross-party and cross-camp.

The chance of neutrality has already been squandered twice in Germany’s history. After the Second World War, this led to Germany’s division and bloc confrontation. In 1990, the 2+4 Treaty overcame inclusion in the Eastern bloc but not in the Western bloc. The result was countless wars by the West that felt too powerful. The opportunity for neutrality and peace must not be missed a third time.

What the campaign “For a neutral Germany” wants to achieve is formulated succinctly. It is about state neutrality based on the basic ideas of Switzerland and Austria. This can make a decisive contribution to peace and security:

Then Germany will no longer interfere in wars abroad

Then Germany would no longer belong to any alliances through which it could be drawn into wars.

Then, foreign military facilities on German soil that serve in warfare will no longer exist.

Then there will be no nuclear weapons or medium and long-range missiles stationed in Germany.

Then Germany will no longer supply military equipment abroad.

Then the Bundeswehr will only serve national defense.

Then peace will emanate from German soil, and Germany will see itself as an active peace mediator.

A wide range of initial signatories welcomes the campaign. Among them is the theologian and peace activist Dr. Eugen Drewermann: “I am happy to support your appeal.” The Swiss historian Dr. Daniele Ganser: “Yes, I think that’s a good thing… In my Empire USA book, I wrote explicitly that Germany should leave NATO and be neutral like Switzerland and Austria.” General Günther Greindl (Soldiers for Neutrality, Austria): “An interesting and bold initiative. Incidentally, it would be in Europe’s geopolitical interest to position itself as neutral in a future multipolar world.”

Support is also evident in statements such as: “‘Germany neutral’ is a perfect landing.” “That would also make my dream come true, which Brecht, for example, sings about in the children’s anthem.” “Of course, I support this appeal, which comes at just the right time and contains everything we no longer want in the future.”

The campaign’s initiators are calling on people to support the petition by signing it. This can be done via the email function on the website https://deutschlandNEUTRAL.de or directly via  unterzeichnen@deutschlandNEUTRAL.de (with first name, last name, place, country, and a brief personal statement and comment if necessary)

The campaign will also continue to include events such as lectures and conferences to convey the vision of a neutral Germany to the public. The aim is to create a strong movement with international appeal in conjunction with the neutrality initiatives already active or being founded in Austria and Switzerland.
