What’s In The Name? Or What Does the Ukrainian Government Want From Its People?

Let me start with somewhat not directly related but relevant story. A scholar living in Ukraine, posted something on a XIX century Russian poet. I disagreed and offered some philological arguments back. Then I hear from this guy, both on FB and in an email, that people comment on my remark, but he can't see it. I became invisible. People in the west, or Russia, or everywhere read what I posted and comment on it, but not people in Ukraine. As simple as that. Stalin used to disappear people, CIA used to disappear people and still does, and now it is Kiev's turn. Of course, platforms in the west do something similar, but in more subtle way, for sure, as I've had a chance to observe recently, when I posted my interview with a non-PC anchor.

Why are they doing it? What’s the point of making someone who comments on the diction of a Romantic poet, invisible?

I see only one explanation. There is a narrative about the war, and it has to be maintained. Why? Obviously, there are very serious money, and serious people and serious interests propping up this narrative.

And what’s the narrative? Ukraine is fighting for its survival against the evil neighbor from the north, which provides an existential threat to the budding, pro-European democracy. This narrative kills many birds with one stone.

It bullies Western “allies” into paying their top dollar in support their “little brother” who wants to join the west. It tells the locals, “go and fight till you die, because you are fighting for your identity, your country, your home, your family.” Ukrainians remember well, how they were rallied to kill Germans during WWII, and they quickly invoke and respond to this narrative.

Consequently, we have exactly what we have: The west is fighting Russia till the last Ukrainian and Ukrainians are marching into a slaughter because they are convinced by their propagandists that bad evil Russkis will come over and take their home, their wives and their children away.

But is it really what is happening on the ground? Do Russians really want to subjugate Ukrainians who don’t want to live under their control? Do they really want to grab the whole territory and turn Ukrainians into Russians-lite?

Of course, if you are a cynical propagandist, you can always find a quote here or there to support any narrative you want. We all seen it done on numerous occasions.

Russians of course, do not want to subjugate those who don’t want them. Nor can they do it. They know very well by their own experience, that it does not work. And they don’t want a guerilla warfare on their hands. That’s the best, if not the only way for the Russian government to fall, so they are not going to do that. Furthermore, understanding the language and culture, Russians know damn well, which areas want them and which — don’t.

But it does not matter for Ukrainian propagandists. They have few corrupt bastards in the west (all neocons and Russophobes) who keep on telling Ukrainians that they can win, that in fact, they are winning. But if you are winning, why stop? So more people march into slaughter.

In other words, if there is anything existential in all this, is the need of the corrupt leadership in the US, EU, and Ukraine, to maintain this narrative, this formula, which allows them to stay in control and prosper, while they fight Russia till the last Ukrainian. And that’s why we keep on hearing about sane and sober Ukrainians who are immediately kicked out of their colleges or jobs, harassed, arrested and silenced when they dare to question the narrative, so comfortable for their leadership.

And if someone wants to tell me that the same applies to Russia, I can’t agree. All I hear from the so called “progressive” and civilized Russians, from my numerous Moscow and St. Petersburg friends, in fact, is how much they are against this war. So their voices are not silenced, one or two cases, blown out of proportions, notwithstanding.
