The Republican House majority taking over in January is getting ready to investigate Hunter Biden’s business dealings and whether “the big guy” was also a direct beneficiary of these dealings.
There is no doubt that during Joe Biden’s vice presidency Hunter was openly and most successfully trading on his dad’s name, which allowed him during short breaks from drugs and prostitutes to charge clients around the world multimillion-dollar fees for little more than providing access to Washington powerbrokers.
So, let’s wish good luck to Jim Jordan, James Comer and the rest of GOP House leadership in pursuing their investigations.
However, even more important is finding out how Joe Biden policies during his vice-presidential and presidential terms affected American and world security. The recent incident with a Ukrainian missile landing in Poland and killing two Polish citizens could have been as fatal as the bullet shot by the Bosnian Serb, Gavrilo Princip, that set off World War I.
This time we were lucky to avoid the worst, despite Ukrainian President Zelensky’s attempts to wag the NATO dog into this war by blaming the incident on Russia. Still, one cannot exclude that the former creative comic actor will come up with some other dangerous scripts. Who knows how long our luck will hold.
Still, there is a second partner of this odd couple pushing us towards World War III. His name is Joe Biden, who was the top manager of the February 2014 coup in Ukraine. Victoria Nuland and US Ambassador in Ukraine Geoffrey Pyatt were just local coordinators on the scene but – as Nuland confirms in a little-noted passage in the middle of her famous “f*ck the EU” conversation with Pyatt — they constantly reported to Biden, who handled the Ukrainian portfolio for Obama. Put another way, Nuland confirms that the coup took place with Joe Biden’s direct knowledge and approval.
Coups have consequences, and the current Russia-Ukraine war is the one. According to a growing numbers of foreign policy experts it might escalate into World War III between nuclear superpowers.
While the ordinary folks in the US, Ukraine, and EU suffer, Biden and Zelensky keep ignoring calls to find a diplomatic solution to this conflict.
Biden’s personal interests are obvious: the longer this war goes on, the more unlikely the chances of uncovering his and Hunter’s murky dealings in Ukraine.
As for Zelensky, he obviously enjoys being catapulted from a local comedian onto the world stage, where he is welcomed and applauded by what is called a collective West. Add to that tens of billions of unaccounted-for US taxpayer funds being dumped into the Ukrainian black hole to keep lots of corrupt officials happy.
Well, returning to the question posed in the title of this article, frankly I do not have too many illusions that the new GOP House leadership is ready to change the course.
They might impeach Biden or call for Hunter’s arrest but so far it does not look they are ready to stop this war, since besides the interests of the above-mentioned Odd Couple their goal to weaken Russia has a bipartisan support.
Of course, there are a few “dissidents” in the Congress but so far their numbers are not enough to overcome Biden’s veto.
On the other side of the ocean, starting with Mikhail Gorbachev all Russian leaders and the overwhelming majority of the Russian people were calling for the full integration with the West. There were many in the US who shared this vision. Republican Congressman Curt Weldon prepared the document “A New Time, A New Beginning” which outlined concrete proposals for US-Russia business, economic, space, science, education, and even security and military cooperation. It was signed by close to a hundred Members of Congress but went nowhere, while Weldon was called a Russian agent long before that bogus accusation was made against Trump.
Former Undersecretary of State and US Ambassador in Moscow George Kennan clearly explained what is going on when, even before collapse of the USSR, he predicted that “were the Soviet Union to sink tomorrow under the waters of the ocean, the American military-industrial complex would have to remain, substantially unchanged, until some other adversary could be invented. Anything else would be an unacceptable shock to the American economy.”
Kennan was right, but only partially because after the Soviet Union left the world’s stage the military-industrial complex was augmented by armies of ideologues who took front stage in formulating US foreign policy. They believed in America’s destiny to impose their post-modern Woke globalism on all of humanity. For them a good Russia is a weak Russia. Instead of its integration with the West they wanted to push it into a geopolitical corner forever.
So, is there a way out from this quagmire? Well, there is, and the answer is democracy, but not the fake one used daily by politicians and the media, but the real one – meaning the power of the people. Let a respected polling agency ask the American people a simple question: “Do you support the current Washington foreign policy, or do you prefer turning enemies into friends as advised by Abraham Lincoln?” I suspect that the answer will be second choice and I am sure Russia and China would also prefer that option on a win-win basis.
According to the recent Pew Center poll here are the top 10 issues of concern to Americans: the economy, guns, crime, health care, voting rules, education, the Supreme Court, abortion, energy policy, immigration. Ukraine doesn’t appear on the list. If this is the case, Members of Congress who indeed believe in real democracy will assemble enough votes to overcome Biden’s policy to continue this and other American wars “as long as it takes.”
