We may never know who sabotaged Nordstream 2. But it wasn’t the first, nor likely the last casualty of such fierce geopolitical conflict.

Multiple explosions last week off the coast of Poland damaged both the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 pipelines, shutting down one and preventing the other from going online. The pipelines, intended to carry natural gas from Russia to Germany, are critical infrastructure for Europe’s energy markets.

The current relationship between the U.S. and Europe is a classic case of abuser and victim. A sabotaged pipeline and Biden’s crazed crusade against Russia have Europe shackled in a downward spiral.

Coming straight from President Putin, it did sound like a bolt from the sky: “We need long-term legally binding guarantees even if we know they cannot be trusted, as the U.S. frequently withdraws from treaties that become uninteresting to them. But it’s something, not just verbal assurances.”

The various crises now springing up in Eastern Europe are meant as warnings against assumptions that Russia will simply accept whatever state of affairs the Western alliance decrees.

Rather than simply greeting the development as a positive move, there were predictably sinister comments from some quarters. Russia was accused in Western media of “holding Europe hostage” over the continent’s energy crisis and using its vast supply of natural gas as a “geopolitical weapon”.
